Born and raised in Hong Kong, Angel Leung is a board-certified music therapist (USA and Canada) and received her master degree in music therapy from Western Michigan University (WMU) with first class honor. The publication of Angel’s graduation thesis titled “The Reentry Experience of International Music Therapy Professionals from the Asia Pacific Rim Area” in the Australian Journal of Music Therapy in 2014 made her the first Hong Kong music therapist being published in a first-tier peer-review professional music therapy journal. She is a frequent speaker in various conferences about her expertise in international music therapy issues.
Throughout the years as a music therapy professional, Angel has worked with a very wide range of clientele ranging from preschool children with speech delay, adolescents with intellectual and emotional disabilities, to geriatric diagnosed with dementia/Alzheimer’s disease in various settings, including schools, nursing homes and elderly daycare centers. In her clinical work, she has collaborated and worked with other healthcare professionals including occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech and language pathologists, behavior consultants, psychologists, doctors and nurses. She also co-treated with these professionals to help clients with various issues such as communication, motor and behavioral issues.
Other than being an active clinician, Angel also served as the clinical supervisor at WMU’s music therapy department, where she supervised undergraduate music therapy students for their pre-internship clinical work. Angel is one of the first credentialed music therapists with extensive overseas clinical experience upon returning Hong Kong, and currently an active clinician working with various organizations and clientele in Hong Kong. She is the co-founder of the Institute for Creative Arts Therapy (ICAT), lecturer at the Hong Kong Institute of Education and HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education, and one of the authors of the Chinese music therapy book “Music – not that simple: music therapy case sharing音樂，殊不簡單”.
Angel is a member of the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT), American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), Robert F. Unkefer Academy for Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT), Canadian Association for Music Therapy (CAMT) and Hong Kong Music Therapy Association (HKMTA).
